It's a who's who of 5G research, all bringing their best stuff.  Top engineers from AT&T, NTT, Korea Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, Nokia, Huawei, Qualcomm, Samsung, Huawei,  and many others are presenting. In 2014 at the first Brooklyn Summit, AT&T's #2 John Stankey, the CTO of NTT DOCOMO Seizo Onoe, and many of their peers spoke. UntiI then I was a doubter. The event convinced me.

Folks at that level wouldn't have flown from around the world unless 5G was closer than I thought. Now, equipment is reaching the field. I wrote that mmWave "just might deliver 10's of gigabits." Few believed it. November 2016, I saw a mmWave system at Huawei Tokyo working at 20 gigabits.

I'm especially looking forward to:      

The World’s First & Fastest 5G Olympics, HongBeom Jeon, Korea Telecom. Korea expects to use the 2018 Olympics as a technology showcase, especially 5G. They are doing some remarkable work, including 5G for mobile.  

5G Getting Close to Reality by Seizo Onoe, NTT CEO. In 2015, Onoe predicted mmWave volume will be modest until 2022-23, especially for mobile. NTT & China Mobile at that time expected to concentrate on spectrum below 6 GHz. A great deal has changed since 2015, including wide deployment of Massive MIMO in Japan. Has his opinion changed?

mm Accuracy and the Next Industrial Revolution. I expect Kenneth Budka of Bell Labs will present uses for advanced wireless far beyond the common cliches. Will 5G also do 3D location? 

Some questions I'd like to ask:

How many more bits per Hz should we expect from 5G New Radio today?

Will microwave backhaul work for most small cells or must it be fiber? 

For the next ten years, will connected cars be fine with 5 ms latency or will the networks need to be built to 1 ms? If the latter, can Cloud RAN deliver 1 ms?

Will it be practical most places to build three or four mmWave networks or must we find another solution for competition?

Dr. Gaurav Bansal

Senior Researcher at the Toyota InfoTechnology Center

Gaurav is a Senior Researcher at the Toyota InfoTechnology Center in Mountain View, CA, where he leads several research initiatives on the design of communication systems for Automated Driving. Gaurav is an expert in Vehicular Communications, pioneering contributions in Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) congestion control and in innovative use-cases to leverage connectivity in cars. His current research interests also include millimeter wave & full-duplex wireless communications. Gaurav represents Toyota in the Automakers’ Vehicle Safety Communication Consortium and in the SAE, ETSI standardization bodies. Gaurav's paper on DSRC Congestion Control received the Best Paper Award at the IEEE WiVEC Symposium. He also holds several patents in the field. Gaurav serves in the editorial board of IEEE Communication Surveys and Tutorials Journal and IEEE Connected Vehicles Initiative. Gaurav holds Electrical Engineering degrees from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur and The University of British Columbia.

Dr. Mihai Banu

VP R&D and CTO, Blue Danube Systems Inc.

Dr. Banu received a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University in 1984. He was with Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ from 1980 to 2001 (Summer Intern, MTS, Dpt. Head and R&D Director) and with Agere Systems, a Lucent spinoff, from 2001 to 2004 (R&D Director). His Bell Labs/Agere contributions include seminal research in analog and RF integrated circuits and leading advanced development in IC Technology and RF Systems for wireless. In 2005 Dr. Banu started MHI Consulting LLC and from 2005 to 2013 provided consulting services and performed independent research work with NSF funding. He founded Blue Danube Systems Inc. to develop and commercialize a revolutionary Massive-MIMO antenna technology for 4.5G and 5G. In 2013, Blue Danube received venture capital funding from Sequoia Capital. Currently, Dr. Banu serves as Blue Danube’s CTO and VP R&D. He is an IEEE Fellow, received several IEEE and Lucent awards and is author of many publications and patents.

Mr. Mark Barrett

CMO, Blu Wireless Technology Ltd

Mark has over 33 years’ experience in wireless technology and product development in technical, operational, business and market development roles. He has also either founded or taken key leadership roles in several start-ups. During the 1980’s he worked at Philips Research where he successfully developed several FMCW radars operating at X band and W band millimetre wave frequencies.

During the 1990’s Mark led the team at ERA Technology which pioneered the applications of array antennas and digital beamforming to satellite, radar and mobile communications (Smart Antennas) applications. He instigated and led the TSUNAMI series of multi company European projects which first demonstrated the use of Smart Antennas for 2G and 3G mobile systems. He has also either led or been involved in the design of over a dozen mixed signal SoCs. In 2001 he founded Mansella Ltd who developed the world’s first Bluetooth cordless telephone, including the development of several complex wireless SoCs.

In 2009 he was one of the founding team at Blu Wireless Technology Ltd where he is currently their Chief Marketing Officer responsible for Business Development and strategic relationships with millimetre wave RF technology suppliers. Blu Wireless is a Silicon IP company developing gigabit rate modem technology for millimeter wave applications such as WiGig (60GHz WiFi), Back Haul, Fixed Wireless Access and 5G mobile for consumer and telecom infrastructure applications.

He holds a First Class degree in Electronics from Nottingham University in the UK and is a Chartered Engineer and Member of the IET.

Dr. Kenneth C. Budka

Senior Partner, Bell Labs Consulting

Dr. Kenneth C. Budka is Senior Partner - Verticals, Enterprise & New Business Models at Bell Labs Consulting. He has served as strategic advisor to government officials and CxOs world-wide, helping transform public safety, transportation and other government services through the adoption of new information and communications technologies, and helping utilities modernize their communications networks to support smart grid applications.

Ken was a key contributor to pivotal milestones and efforts in the ongoing, global transformation of public safety communications and served as Vice-Chair of the 15-member Technical Advisory Board for First Responder Interoperability, a panel of experts established by the U.S. Congress to set minimum technical interoperability requirements for the Nationwide Public Safety 700 MHz Broadband Network, FirstNet.

Ken has consulted for utilities world-wide, helping evolve their legacy operations networks into networks capable of supporting smart grid applications. He is coauthor with Bell Labs’ Jayant Deshpande and Marina Thottan of the book Communication Networks for Smart Grid: Making Smart Grid Real (Springer 2014).

Ken received the Ph.D. and M.Sci. degrees in Engineering Science from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts and the B.S.E.E. summa cum laude from Union College in Schenectady, New York. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE, holds 21 patents and is the author of over 20 papers in refereed technical journals.

Dr. Giuseppe Caire

Professor, Technical University of Berlin, Germany

Giuseppe Caire was born in Torino, Italy, in 1965. He received the B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Politecnico di Torino (Italy), in 1990, the M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University in 1992 and the Ph.D. from Politecnico di Torino in 1994. He has been a post-doctoral research fellow with the European Space Agency (ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands) in 1994-1995, Assistant Professor in Telecommunications at the Politecnico di Torino, Associate Professor at the University of Parma, Italy, Professor with the Department of Mobile Communications at the Eurecom Institute, Sophia-Antipolis, France, a Professor of Electrical Engineering with the Viterbi School of Engineering, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and he is currently an Alexander von Humboldt Professor with the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department of the Technical University of Berlin, Germany.

He served as Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Communications in 1998-2001 and as Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory in 2001-2003. He received the Jack Neubauer Best System Paper Award from the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society in 2003, the IEEE Communications Society and Information Theory Society Joint Paper Award in 2004 and in 2011, the Okawa Research Award in 2006, the Alexander von Humboldt Professorship in 2014, and the Vodafone Innovation Prize in 2015. Giuseppe Caire is a Fellow of IEEE since 2005. He has served in the Board of Governors of the IEEE Information Theory Society from 2004 to 2007, and as officer from 2008 to 2013. He was President of the IEEE Information Theory Society in 2011. His main research interests are in the field of communications theory, information theory, channel and source coding with a particular focus on wireless communications.

Mr. Doug Castor

Senior Director, InterDigital

Douglas Castor is Senior Director of Future Wireless R&D at InterDigital’s Pennsylvania office, where he leads the incubation and development of emerging wireless technologies. In recent years, Doug and his team have developed InterDigital’s EdgeHaul™ and EdgeLink™ millimeter wave solutions that deliver mesh connectivity using a software defined networking (SDN) framework. Since joining InterDigital in 2000, he has supported roles in both product development and research innovations for 3G, 4G, 5G cellular and other wireless technologies. Prior to joining InterDigital, Doug held Communication Engineer positions at General Electric, Lockheed Martin, and General Atronics. He holds numerous issued patents and patent applications. In 2006, he was awarded the Delaware Valley Young Engineer of the Year award from the IEEE Philadelphia Section. Doug hold a BSEE from the Pennsylvania State University (1992) and MSEE degree from the University of Pennsylvania (1995).

Mr. Mark Cudak

Department Head, Nokia – Bell Labs

Mark is a Department Head in the Small Cells Research Group with Nokia Bell Labs. His research focuses on cellular network evolution and his team is looking at novel ways to meet the continued growth in data consumption and expanding diversity of wireless applications. In addition, Mark has been leading Nokia’s 5G mmWave proof-of-concept system and has developed a series of demonstrations helping prove the viability of mmWave for cellular access.

Prior to joining Nokia in 2011, Mark was with Motorola for 20 years where he worked on a variety of wireless data systems including GPRS, WCDMA, HSPA, WiMAX and LTE. Mark has over 40 issued patents, is a Nokia Bell Labs Fellow and holds a M.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Dr. Frank H.P Fitzek

Professor, TU Dresden

Frank H. P. Fitzek is a Professor and head of the “Deutsche Telekom Chair of Communication Networks” at TU Dresden coordinating the 5G Lab Germany.

He received his diploma (Dipl.-Ing.) degree in electrical engineering from the University of Technology – Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) – Aachen, Germany, in 1997 and his Ph.D. (Dr.-Ing.) in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University Berlin, Germany in 2002 and became Adjunct Professor at the University of Ferrara, Italy in the same year. In 2003 he joined Aalborg University as Associate Professor and later became Professor.

He co-founded several start-up companies starting with acticom GmbH in Berlin in 1999. He has visited various research institutes including Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), VTT, and Arizona State University. In 2005 he won the YRP award for the work on MIMO MDC and received the Young Elite Researcher Award of Denmark. He was selected to receive the NOKIA Champion Award several times in a row from 2007 to 2011. In 2008 he was awarded the Nokia Achievement Award for his work on cooperative networks. In 2011 he received the SAPERE AUDE research grant from the Danish government and in 2012 he received the Vodafone Innovation price. In 2015 he was awarded the honorary degree “Doctor Honoris Causa” from Budapest University of Technology and Economy (BUTE).

His current research interests are in the areas of wireless and mobile 5G communication networks, mobile phone programming, network coding, cross layer as well as energy efficient protocol design and cooperative networking

Dr. Amitabha (Amitava) Ghosh

Head, Small Cell Research at Nokia Bell Labs

Amitabha (Amitava) Ghosh is a Nokia Fellow and Head, Small Cell Research at Nokia Bell Labs. He joined Motorola in 1990 after receiving his Ph.D in Electrical Engineering from Southern Methodist University, Dallas. Since joining Motorola he worked on multiple wireless technologies starting from IS-95, cdma-2000, 1xEV-DV/1XTREME, 1xEV-DO, UMTS, HSPA, 802.16e/WiMAX and 3GPP LTE. Dr. Ghosh has 60 issued patents, has written multiple book chapters and has authored numerous external and internal technical papers. He is currently working on 3GPP LTE-Advanced and 5G technologies. His research interests are in the area of digital communications, signal processing and wireless communications. He is a Fellow of IEEE, recipient of 2016 IEEE Stephen O. Rice prize and co-author of the book titled “Essentials of LTE and LTE-A”.

Dr. Arun Ghosh

Director, Advanced Wireless Technologies, AT&T Labs

Dr. Arun Ghosh is the Director of the Advanced Wireless Technologies in AT&T Labs. He leads a team of researchers in AT&T Labs and is responsible for development of new technology and concepts related to wireless communications. Amongst other his responsibility includes researching new technology related 5G such as massive MIMO, self-backhauling ultra-dense network, mmWave technology. Currently he is also involved in building several mmWave testbed in AT&T Labs intended for the purposes of developing and testing the essential building blocks of 5G. His background is in digital communication and signal processing and in the past he has also worked extensively on various subjects such as MIMO, interference cancellation, cloud RAN, advanced system architecture in the context of 3G and 4G. Dr. Ghosh also represents AT&T in various standards organization such as 3GPP, IEEE, and WiMAX. He has also authored several bestselling books on LTE and WiMAX. He received his PhD from University Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his undergraduate from Indian Institute of Technology.

Dr. Ian Gresham

Systems and IC Architect, Anokiwave

Ian Gresham received the B. Eng and Ph.D degrees in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from the University of Leeds, U.K. in 1988 and 1994 respectively. He has almost 30 years of microwave and millimeter–wave experience in the semiconductor industry taking projects from fundamental research through to high-volume production in the commercial wireless, automotive, and aerospace and defence market segments.

 

Ian joined Anokiwave from NXP Semiconductors as Technology Fellow in 2014 where he works directly with customers as a Systems and IC Architect developing highly integrated phased-array ICs for 5G, SATCOM and radar applications. In addition to his publications and patents, Ian has been recognized in his career by winning the 2003 European Microwave Prize, and being the recipient of the IEEE MTT-S Outstanding Young Engineer Award in 2006. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.

Dr. Robert Heath

Professor, University of Texas at Austin

Robert received the Ph.D. in EE from Stanford University. He is a Cullen Trust for Higher Education Endowed Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin and a Member of the Wireless Networking and Communications Group.

Robert is also the President and CEO of MIMO Wireless Inc and Chief Innovation Officer at Kuma Signals LLC. Prof. Heath is a recipient of the 2012 Signal Processing Magazine Best Paper award, a 2013 Signal Processing Society best paper award, the 2014 EURASIP Journal on Advances in Signal Processing best paper award, and the 2014 Journal of Communications and Networks best paper award, the 2016 IEEE Communications Society Fred W. Ellersick Prize, and the 2016 IEEE Communications Society and Information Theory Society Joint Paper Award.

He is an author of the book "Introduction to Wireless Digital Communication”, published by Prentice Hall in 2017, co-author of the book “Millimeter Wave Wireless Communications” published by Prentice Hall in 2014 and author of Digital Wireless Communication: Physical Layer Exploration Lab Using the NI USRP, National Technology and Science Press, 2012. He is a licensed Amateur Radio Operator, a registered Professional Engineer in Texas, and is a Fellow of the IEEE.

Mr. Mikael Hook

Director, Radio Research, Ericsson Research

Mikael Höök received his M.Sc. Degree in Electronic Engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. He has 20 years of experience in the areas of research and standardization of wireless technologies. Mikael Höök has been Head of Radio Access Technologies at Ericsson Research since 2007. He is based in Kista, Stockholm, and the responsibility covers research of air-interface design, advanced signal processing, multi-antenna systems, radio network performance, propagation, and RF design. Results are fed into standardization, regulation and product development. Höök has been involved in the research and standardization of 2G, 3G, 4G and now 5G radio access.

Dr. Hongbeom Jeon

Executive Vice President, KT

Dr. Jeon has worked on the R&D and technology strategy area for the next generation networks during the most of his career in KT. He researched the communication technologies such as the evolution of network architecture and strategic development. He also had led the strategic planning of technology evolution and deployment in the services and networks of KT. He was also formerly in charge of technical examination for technology investments and strategic planning for future business at KT, and the head of Smart Green Development Center, where he had directed smart green IT convergence technology issues such as the implementation of Green IT and Smart Grids of KT.

Connected car technology expert and serial entrepreneur with years of experience in the field of intelligent transportation systems and telematics with a strong focus on wireless technologies. Recent service includes membership of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) Awards Board (2017–2019), chairing of the IEEE SPS SPCOM technical committee (2015–2016), chairing of the steering committee for the IEEE Wireless Communications Letters (2014–2015), and organization of the Asilomar SSC conference (general chair 2015, technical chair 2012). He received the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine Best Column Award twice, in 2012 and 2014, and the IEEE ComSoc Stephen O. Rice Prize in Communications Theory in 2015.

YongGyoo Lee is Senior Vice President of Network Strategy Business Unit of KT. In this role he is in charge of developing network strategy which includes formation of future-proof network architecture, roadmap for next-generation evolution of KT’s network, spectrum strategy as well as technical standardization.

Currently, he is in charge of the development of KT’s 5G pre-commercial system for 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games. He has successfully coordinated KT 5G activities since January 2015. He is also responsible for the network strategy in IoT area, with main emphasis on NB-IoT technology and he had major role in LTE technology development activity since 2011.

He had professional engagement with KT in network development, operation department as well as new service incubation role with global partners. He also has technical background of mobile core network development.

He made the critical contribution when KT won the "Outstanding LTE Contribution and Outstanding Overall Mobile Technology-The CTO’s choice" at GSMA MWC GLOMO Award 2014, held in Barcelona and "Most Significant Development for Commercial LTE Network by an Operator" at LTE Award 2012. He was also the recipient of the Best Contributor, awarded by the Ministry of Information and Telecommunication of Korean government in the year 2000.

He has been working as an alternate member of NGMN Board for KT since January 2015.

Mr. Gerry Libunao

Distinguished Member of Technical Staff, Verizon Communications

Gerry Libunao is a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Verizon Communications supporting Verizon’s Wireless Standardization participation in Industry Forums and Partnership Projects and a key part of Verizon’s Advanced Technology Strategy team. He is the primary GSMA North America contact for Verizon and a member of various GSMA Working Groups and Projects.

During his 30 years of Telecom Wireless Industry experience, Gerry was involved with a combination of Information Technology positions of increasing responsibility in the areas of Rating, Billing, Customer Care, Service Creation and Delivery platforms. Prior to joining Verizon’s Network organization, Gerry was an IT Architect in the Verizon Wireless Data Solutions Group. Gerry has a Bachelor degree in Physics from Philippine Normal University.

Durga joined Qualcomm in 1998 as an Engineer. Over the past 18 years, he has worked on 3G and 4G systems, and was the Project Engineer of 4G LTE-Advanced in Qualcomm Research from 2008-15, responsible for design, standardization, prototype implementation, pre-commercial operator trials and inter-operability tests with vendors.

Currently, he oversees the 5G and 4G cellular projects in Qualcomm Research, spanning Mobile Broadband Communications, Millimeter Wave based Backhaul and Access systems, Shared Spectrum Access, Internet of Things (IoT), Mission Critical Services and Cellular Vehicular Communications (C-V2X).

In addition, he heads the Systems Engineering department in Qualcomm Research.

He is the recipient of Qualcomm’s IP Excellence Award, Qualcomm Distinguished Contributor Award for Project Leadership and Upendra Patel Achievement Awards for Outstanding Contributions to HSPA and LTE.

Durga holds a B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, and an M.S and Ph.D. from UCLA. His research interests include MIMO, signal processing, communication theory, cognitive radio, IoT, V2X and machine learning. He is a member of IEEE and holds 248 U.S. patents.

Mr. Peter Merz

Head of end to end Mobile Network Solutions, Nokia Bell Labs

Peter is leading the end to end Mobile Network Solution research lab within Nokia Bell Labs. In 2007 he took over the position of Head of Radio Systems research in Nokia Siemens Network and later Nokia Networks. The research performed in this unit has substantially contributed to the evolution of WCDMA, HSPA and LTE/LTE-A and nowadays 5G technologies and systems that today and the future provide Mobile Broadband on a global base.

Since last year he is leading the e2e Mobile Network Solutions lab within Nokia Bell labs. The lab is responsible for driving breakthroughs in the area of mobile networking with focus to transform how we connect with each other and with the world around us by unlocking an unlimited range of services and use cases through creation of future-proof, adaptive and massively scalable E2E solutions for mobile networks.

Mr. Takehiro Nakamura

Takehiro Nakamura is VP and Managing Director of 5G Laboratory in NTT DOCOMO, Inc.

Mr. Nakamura has been working for research and development of the W-CDMA, HSPA, LTE/LTE-Advanced and 5G technologies.

He has been engaged in the standardization activities in Japan. He is currently the Acting Chairman of the Strategy & Planning Committee in 5G Mobile Communication Promotion Forum(5GMF) in Japan.

He has been contributing to standardization activities in 3GPP since1999. He had contributed to 3GPP TSG-RAN as a chairman during April 2009 to March 2013.

Dr. Akihiro Nakao

Professor, University of Toyko

Akihiro Nakao received B.S.(1991) in Physics, M.E.(1994) in Information Engineering from the University of Tokyo. He was at IBM Yamato Laboratory, Tokyo Research Laboratory, and IBM Texas Austin from 1994 till 2005. He received M.S.(2001) and Ph.D.(2005) in Computer Science from Princeton University. He has been teaching as an associate professor (2005-2014) and as a professor (2014-present) in Applied Computer Science, at Interfaculty Initiative in Information (III) Studies, Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies, the University of Tokyo. He is a chairperson of the department at III. He has also been appointed as a chairman of the Network Architecture Committee of 5G Mobile Communication Promotion Forum (5GMF) since Sept. 2014.

Mr. Lauri Oksanen

Vice President for Research and Technology, Nokia Bell Labs

Lauri heads Technology, Architecture, Vision, and Standardization in Nokia Bell Labs. He started his industrial career 28 years ago in fiber optics in Nokia. Then Lauri moved to mobile networks where he has worked with all major wireless technologies from GSM to 5G. Lauri has worked in various advanced technology management positions covering fixed and wireless access, core, management and services, including also the HW and SW platforms and cloud and security technologies. Lauri has Master's and Licentiate degrees in Telecommunications from Helsinki University of Technology (now Aalto), where he also worked as a researcher before joining Nokia.

Mr. Seizo Onoe

CTO, NTT DOCOMO

Seizo was named Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President and a Member of the Board of Directors of DoCoMo in June 2012. Mr. Onoe became a Senior Vice President and Managing Director of the R&D Strategy Department in June 2008. He was a Vice President and took positions as Managing Director of the Radio Access Network related development departments from July 2002 to June 2008.

He has been responsible for leading initiatives in the research and development of the analog cellular system, the digital cellular system, W-CDMA/ HSPA, LTE, LTE-Advanced and 5G. He is working on the research and development of radio access networks, core networks, consumer devices and cloud services. He has worked for NTT and NTT DoCoMo since 1982, acquiring more than 30 years of experience. Mr. Onoe has a master’s degree in electronics from the Kyoto University Graduate School of Engineering.

Dr. Tom Perera Ph. D.

For the last 30 years he has been hunting for, researching, restoring and selling what is arguably the most historic communication device of all and perhaps the world's first laptop computer, the German Enigma cipher machine.

Mr. Jerry Pi

CTO, Straight Path Communications, Inc.

Jerry Pi is the Chief Technology Officer of Straight Path Communications Inc., a leading wireless communication company with one of the largest 39 GHz and 28 GHz spectrum portfolios in the United States. He leads the spectrum regulation, research, and product development activities in millimeter-wave 5G, Gigabit broadband, and backhaul solutions. Prior to joining Straight Path, Jerry was a Senior Director at Samsung Research America in Dallas, Texas, where he led system research, standardization, and prototyping activities in 4G and 5G. Jerry pioneered the development of millimeter-wave 5G. He co-authored the world's first invention and first journal article on Millimeter-wave Mobile Broadband. He also led the development of the world’s first 5G baseband and RF system prototype that successfully demonstrated the feasibility of 5G mobile communication at 28 GHz. Before joining Samsung in 2006, he was with Nokia Research Center in Dallas and San Diego, where he was a leading contributor to Nokia's 3G wireless standardization and modem development efforts. He has authored more than 30 technical journal and conference papers and is the inventor of more than 100 patents. He holds a B.E. degree from Tsinghua University (with honor), a M.S. degree from the Ohio State University, and an MBA degree from Cornell University (with distinction). He is a Fellow of IEEE.

Dr. Sundeep Rangan

Director, NYU Wireless

Dr. Rangan received the B.A.Sc. at the University of Waterloo, Canada and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley, all in Electrical Engineering. He has held postdoctoral appointments at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and Bell Labs. In 2000, he co-founded (with four others) Flarion Technologies, a spin off of Bell Labs, that developed Flash OFDM, the first cellular OFDM data system and pre-cursor to 4G cellular systems including LTE and WiMAX. In 2006, Flarion was acquired by Qualcomm Technologies. Dr. Rangan was a Director of Engineering at Qualcomm involved in OFDM infrastructure products. He joined the ECE department at NYU Tandon (formerly NYU Polytechnic) in 2010. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and the current Director of NYU WIRELESS, an industry-academic research center on next-generation wireless systems. His research interests are in wireless communications, signal processing, information theory and control theory.

Dr. Theodore (Ted) Rappaport

Professor, NYU Tandon School of Engineering

Theodore (Ted) S. Rappaport is the David Lee/Ernst Weber Chaired Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at NYU Tandon School of Engineering and is a Professor of Computer Science at New York University’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. He is also a Professor of Radiology at the NYU School of Medicine. He also serves as the founding director of NYU WIRELESS.

Rappaport is the founding director of NYU WIRELESS, one of the world’s first academic research centers to combine wireless engineering, computer science, and medicine. Earlier in his career, he founded two of the world’s largest academic wireless research centers: the Wireless Networking and Communications Group (WNCG) at the University of Texas at Austin in 2002, and the Mobile and Portable Radio Research Group (MPRG), now known as Wireless@Virginia Tech, in 1990. He has advised or launched numerous high-tech companies in the wireless communications and computing fields, including Telephia (acquired by Nielsen), Motion Computing, Paratek Microwave (acquired by Research in Motion), and two university spin-out companies that developed some of the technologies now used in the wireless industry–TSR Technologies (acquired by Allen Telecom in 1993) and Wireless Valley Communications (acquired by Motorola in 2005). He has conducted pioneering research in the fields of wireless communications and smart antennas, most recently in the field of millimeter wave wireless communication networks and 5G wireless.

Rappaport is a pioneer in the fields of radio wave propagation for cellular and personal communications, wireless communication system design, and broadband wireless communications circuits and systems at millimeter wave frequencies. His research has influenced many international wireless standard bodies over three decades, and he and his students have invented measurement equipment, simulation methodologies, and analytical approaches for the exploration and modeling of radio propagation channels and communication system design in a vast range of spectrum bands for emerging wireless systems. He also invented the technology of site-specific radio frequency (RF) channel modeling and design for wireless network deployment-a technology now used routinely throughout the wireless industry. More recently, his work has explored the millimeter wave (mmWave) bands for future broadband access.

Rappaport has served on the Technological Advisory Council of the Federal Communications Commission, assisted the governor and CIO of Virginia in formulating rural broadband initiatives for Internet access, and conducted research for NSF, Department of Defense, and dozens of global telecommunications companies throughout his career. He is one of the most highly cited authors in the wireless field, having published over 200 technical papers and over 20 books, and is a highly sought-after expert. He has over 100 patents issued or pending. As a faculty member, Rappaport has advised approximately 100 students who continue to accomplish great things in the communications, electromagnetics, and circuit design fields throughout industry, academia, and government.

Mr. Paul M. Sakamoto

Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, Paul received his BSEE from Oregon State University, which made him part of its Academy of Distinguished Engineers in 2010. Paul is a long term resident of Silicon Valley.

Dr. Henning Schulzrinne

Professor, Columbia University

Henning is Julian Clarence Levi Professor of Computer Science at Columbia University. He received his undergraduate degree in economics and electrical engineering from the Darmstadt University of Technology, Germany, his MSEE degree as a Fulbright scholar from the University of Cincinnati, Ohio and his Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Massachusetts. He was a member of technical staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill and an associate department head at GMD-Fokus (Berlin), before joining the Computer Science and Electrical Engineering departments at Columbia University, New York. From 2004 to 2009, he served as chair of the Department of Computer Science. Since 2010, he has also been affiliated with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), serving as CTO until 2014 and currently serves as technical advisor.

Henning has been a member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Communications Society and was vice chair of ACM SIGCOMM, former chair of the IEEE Communications Society Technical Committees on Computer Communications and the Internet and has been chair of a number of conferences. He served on the Internet2 Applications, Middleware and Services Advisory Council. He also has been a member of the IAB (Internet Architecture Board). He serves on a number of conference and journal steering committees, including for the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking.

Henning has published more than 250 journal and conference papers, and more than 70 Internet RFCs. Protocols co-developed by him are now Internet standards, used by almost all Internet telephony and multimedia applications. He is a Fellow of the ACM and IEEE, has received the New York City Mayor's Award for Excellence in Science and Technology, the VON Pioneer Award, TCCC service award, the IEEE Region 1 William Terry Award for Lifetime Distinguished Service to IEEE, the UMass Computer Science Outstanding Alumni recognition and the IEEE Internet Award.

Mr. Franz Seiser

Vice President Core Network and Services, Deutsche Telekom AG

Franz is Vice President Core Network and Services at Deutsche Telekom Group Technology. In his role he is in charge of driving the development of innovative and efficient network architectures for DT in the areas of core network and service enabling, covering both fixed and mobile networks. 

Prior to this role, Franz held various management positions in the area of mobile core network and mobile network architecture in DT headquarters. Besides other tasks, he was deeply involved in definition, standardisation and introduction of 4G.

Franz joined the mobile communications industry mid 2000 in Austria with a focus on preparations and introducing of 3G, moving on to DT headquarters in Germany early 2006. Before joining DT, he worked as System Engineer for PBX software from 1996, focussing on Enterprise VoIP issues from 1998, being based in Europe and U.S. (Silicon Valley). Franz studied Electrical Engineering and holds a M. Sc. degree from Technical University Vienna.

Mr. Juha Sipila

Juha Sipilä received his M.Sc degree from Helsinki University of Technology, Finland, in 1998. He has since 1996 worked in various positions at Nokia & Nokia Siemens Networks including Head of WCDMA System Design and architecture and Head of Single RAN System Design and Architecture. Currently he is leading several system and product architecture development teams globally as head of 5G System Engineering. Juha has several international patents. Areas of interest include global R&D management, 5G technology and telecom product creation and evolution.

Dr. Theodore (Tod) Sizer

Vice President Mobile Radio Research - Nokia Bell Labs

Dr. Theodore (Tod) Sizer is Head of Mobile Radio Research in Nokia Bell Labs. In this role, he leads teams innovating in all aspects of Mobile Radio systems, technology and software. Tod graduated from Amherst College, Magna Cum Laude and received his Masters and Doctorate from the Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester and is a Fellow of Bell Labs, WWRF, and IEEE. He serves on the Advisory Board to the US National Institute of Standards and Technology and was awarded the 2012 Popular Science Breakthrough Innovation award for the lightRadio invention. He is the author of 52 US patents, over 50 refereed publications and is a member of the IEEE and OSA.

Dr. Kenneth (Ken) Stewart

Senior Fellow, INTEL

Kenneth (Ken) Stewart is an Intel Senior Fellow, Communication and Devices Group, Wireless and Communications Technology at Intel Corporation. Over the past 25 years in the industry, Stewart has contributed strongly to fundamental research in mobile wireless technologies including GSM, CDMA, WCDMA and LTE, and to the development of the associated 3GPP international wireless standards, particularly HSPA, LTE and LTE-Advanced. He has engineered and reduced to practice base station and mobile solutions based on the same technologies.

Most recently, Stewart was CTO for TE Connectivity’s wireless division, where he drove innovation and product development for advanced small cell and distributed antenna systems, wavelength division multiplexed fiber distributed radio access networks, coordinated multipoint transmission systems and solutions for broadband wireless access infrastructure.

Previously, Stewart was vice president of Standards and Research at Motorola Mobile Devices, where he was responsible for international standards and research work in areas ranging from radio access networks, through multimedia systems to mobile applications and services. He served as advisor to Motorola Mobile Devices senior leadership on fundamental technical and strategic issues regarding the performance and evolution of radio access networks and multimedia technology.

Stewart has held the position of Motorola Dan Noble Fellow and served on Motorola’s Science Advisory Board. He holds more than 35 issued patents, with multiple patents pending. He is a graduate of the Institute for Communications and Signal Processing at the University of Strathclyde, where he is also Visiting Professor.

Dr. Giampaolo Tardioli

Giampaolo is vice president of the Chipset and Components segment, part of the Communications Solutions Group, He is in charge of solutions serving the modem, RFIC, and front-end modules markets.

Prior to his current position, Tardioli was senior planning manager of the Communication Measurement Solution and member of the Central Planning Management team. He joined Hewlett-Packard in 1998 and served in a variety of senior management roles in R&D, quality, operations and manufacturing both at the division and business unit levels.

Tardioli holds an M.Sc, in Electrical Engineering from the Universita’ Politecnica delle Marche, Italy, and a Ph.D. in Computational Electromagnetics from the University of Victoria, Canada.

Dr. Frederick Vook

Senior Research Specialist, Nokia

Frederick W. Vook received the B.S. degree from Syracuse University in 1987 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from The Ohio State University in 1989 and 1992, respectively, all in electrical engineering. From 1992 to 1995, he was with the Motorola Wireless Data Group where he worked on 19 GHz and 2.4 GHz propagation modeling and air-interface design for Motorola's wireless LAN products. From 1995 to 2008, he was with Motorola Laboratories, where he worked on MIMO, beamforming, and air interface design for broadband mobile communication systems. From 2008-2011, he was with Motorola Home & Networks Mobility where he worked on physical layer modeling and MIMO techniques for IEEE 802.16/WiMAX and LTE Rel-8-10. Since 2011, he has been with Nokia, Arlington Heights, IL, where his current work involves advanced antenna array solutions for LTE and 5G cellular systems.

Mr. Dave Wolter

Assistant Vice President – Radio Technology & Architecture, AT&T

Dave is currently responsible for driving the assessment and development of AT&T’s advanced radio technologies including LTE-Advanced, unlicensed, and 5G technologies. This consists of analysis, simulation, testing and providing technical contributions to global standards. Dave’s responsibilities also include RAN architecture definition driving SDN/NFV based approaches into the RAN,

 

Dave has been with AT&T since 1991, focused on identifying and assessing key emerging wireless technologies, shaping them to meet customer and service provider needs, and moving them from the lab into the network. He and his team also provides strategic analyses, spectrum strategy and standards support.

Dave began his career at the McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Company, holding various technical and management positions in applied research, where he performed avionics, communication, and reconnaissance systems simulation and led a team of engineers in the analysis and specification of advanced stealth aircraft communication systems. He also provided technical support to the F-15, F/A-18 and AV-8B aircraft programs.

Dave has a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis. Dave and his wife Lori have 2 children and live in Austin.

Dr. Ian Wong

Senior Manager, National Instruments

Dr. Ian C. Wong is Senior Manager of the Advanced Wireless Research group at National Instruments where he leads the company’s 3GPP and 802.11 wireless standards strategy and platforms for wireless system design, simulation, prototyping, and implementation. From 2007-2009, he was a systems research and standards engineer with Freescale Semiconductor where he represented Freescale in the 3GPP LTE standardization efforts. He is a senior member of the IEEE, the acting Director of Industry Communities for IEEE Communications Society, and was the Industry Program Chair for IEEE Globecom 2015 in Austin. His current research interests include 5G wireless systems design and prototyping, and design automation tools for rapid algorithm development.

Dr. Wong is the co-author of the Springer book “Resource Allocation for Multiuser Multicarrier Wireless Systems,” has over 10 patents, over 25 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers, and over 40 standards contributions. He was awarded the Texas Telecommunications Engineering Consortium Fellowship in 2003-2004, and the Wireless Networking and Communications Group student leadership award in 2007.

He received a MS and PhD degree in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 2004 and 2007, respectively, and a BS degree in electronics and communications engineering (magna cum laude) from the University of the Philippines in 2000.

Dr. Charlie Zhang

VP and head of Standards and Mobility Innovation Lab with Samsung Research America

Charlie Jianzhong Zhang is a VP and head of Standards and Mobility Innovation Lab with Samsung Research America, where he leads research, prototyping and standards for 5G cellular systems and future multimedia networks. He received his Ph.D. degree from University of Wisconsin, Madison. From August 2009 to August 2013, he served as the Vice Chairman of the 3GPP RAN1 working group and led development of LTE and LTE-Advanced technologies such as 3D channel modeling, UL-MIMO and CoMP, Carrier Aggregation for TD-LTE, etc. Before joining Samsung, he was with Motorola from 2006 to 2007 working on 3GPP HSPA standards, and with Nokia Research Center from 2001 to 2006 working on IEEE 802.16e (WiMAX) standard and EDGE/CDMA receivers. Charlie is a Fellow of IEEE.

Dr. Peiying Zhu

5G Wireless System Research Lead, Huawei

Dr. Peiying Zhu is a Huawei Fellow. She is currently leading 5G wireless system research in Huawei. The focus of her research is advanced wireless access technologies with more than 200 granted patents. She has been regularly giving talks and panel discussions on 5G vision and enabling technologies. She served as the guest editor for IEEE Signal processing magazine special issue on the 5G revolution and co-chaired for various 5G workshops. She is actively involved in IEEE 802 and 3GPP standards development. She is currently a WiFi Alliance Board member.

Prior to joining Huawei in 2009, Peiying was a Nortel Fellow and Director of Advanced Wireless Access Technology in the Nortel Wireless Technology Lab. She led the team and pioneered research and prototyping on MIMO-OFDM and Multi-hop relay. Many of these technologies developed by the team have been adopted into LTE standards and 4G products.

Peiying Zhu received the Master of Science degree and Doctor Degree from Southeast University and Concordia University in 1985 and 1993 respectively.
