Three years ago, Stanford Professor Paulraj told me Massive MIMO was going to produce an enormous capacity boost. It's now coming out of the labs. Every network architect in the world is watching the Massive MIMO at Softbank in Japan and China Mobile. They are getting between 3X and 10X more capacity in the same amount of spectrum and are ordering thousands of systems. I've received so many reports of "tests" I ignore them. I'm now getting committed builds, including Sprint in the U.S.

The press release said "tests" but company spokesman Tesch confirmed to me the decision is made to deploy.

They have 3.8M customers on what the company calls the busiest network in Austria. Traffic has doubled in the last year, aided by aggressive prices of about $20 for a 17 gig cap. Traffic growths rates in countries like the U.S. had dropped to about 40%/year, as Cisco and I have been predicting for several years. Traffic would double as smartphones first became come and then go into steep decline. As wireless companies offer far more data in their basic plans, people are using more LTE and less Wi-Fi.

Mike Dano at Fierce notes a massive shift at Sprint to cellular from Wi-Fi.  Sprint is now offering "unlimited" data as is T-Mobile. (Soft cap at 23-28 gigabytes/month.) People aren't using as much Wi-Fi when they don't face a cost to use LTE instead.  

Almost no one yet believes we are entering an Age of Wireless Abundance. Wireless is becoming so much more efficient that telcos around the world are doubling, tripling, and going unlimited. Verizon's David Small estimates cost per bit is going down 40% per year and others estimate 55%. That allows much more data at the same price. Ericsson estimates capex will go down 2% to 6% worldwide the next few years while offering each customer so much more.  

Three + ZTE: Europapremiere with Pre5G / Massive MIMO implementation

Hutchison Three Austria and one of the leading international telecom infrastructure companies ZTE today announced that they have successfully completed the first tests of the Massive MIMO implementation across Europe. 
Massive MIMO will form the basis for radio transmission at 5G. 
The tests were carried out as part of a cooperation between the two companies in the innovation center on the premises of the company in Vienna in Floridsdorf. 

The implementation, which runs under the name Pre5G, increased the capacity of radio cells to 4 to 6 times compared to conventional LTE solutions. The successfully launched test series was carried out with currently commercially available 4G terminals and will be continued in the coming weeks.

"As network operators with by far the highest mobile data traffic in Austria it is very important to us that we can continue to provide the best data transmission quality to our customers our common Massive MIMO implementation with ZTE is the way Because this technology allows us to get a multiple of our frequency spectrum. " 

5G is the next generation of mobile radio and will be able to provide data rates of up to 10 Gbps, which is a multiple of what is possible with the current technologies. Already in February of this year representatives of ZTE and Hutchison Drei Austria signed a joint MoU on the basis of which the innovation leadership of the two companies for the 5G technology should be strengthened and further developed. 

An important milestone in this successful collaboration is the new Connect netting test: Hutchison Drei Austria, with 555 out of 600 points for data, was able to hold its pioneering role in the nationwide LTE supply thanks to the use of ZTE technology. 

Since 2015, ZTE has launched some Pre5G Massive MIMO pilot projects in markets outside Europe. Numerous partnerships have been concluded with leading mobile operators, including China Mobile, Softbank and Korea Telecom. To date, more than 20 Pre5G networks have been tested worldwide and ZTE will continue to expand its 5G innovation leadership in the future.
